The Importance of Cruelty-Free Beauty Products + Cosmetics

What do you truly know about animal testing?

When you think of animal testing, what's the first animal that comes to your mind?... Rats? Mice? Guinea Pigs? Did you know that along with those small innocent animals, testing is also performed on dogs?

As a cruelty free company who never tests our products on animals, we wanted to help de-bunk some common myths about animal testing, and share with you what we're doing to fight it.

Lab Testing on Dogs

Last year, when one of our team members rescued a dog from Beagle Freedom Project, we learned the disturbing and prevalent reality of lab testing on dogs.

Despite being animal advocates and a cruelty-free company, most of us had somehow been sheltered from the fact that "man's best friend" was also a victim of laboratory cruelty.

We were heartbroken when we heard that Beagles are one of the top test-subjects in laboratory testing due to their kind demeanor and docile nature. As a team full of dog lovers, we knew that we had to help out in some way.

Our founder is extremely passionate about using our platform to give back to communities in need. One way in which we do this is by donating a proceed of our sales to a different charity each holiday season.

In 2024, we chose Beagle Freedom Project as our holiday recipient. Beagle Freedom Project is an organization whose mission is to end all forms of animal testing and exploitation. They rescue and rehabilitate animals in need, work to change laws and legislation, and invested in global education initiatives to raise awareness about animal testing.

De-bunking Animal Testing Myths

Some harmful myths about animal testing in the cosmetics industry is what keeps consumers from knowing the full truth. Here are some myths that you may have heard about testing on animals:

MYTH: Animal testing is required for product safety regulation.

TRUTH: According to the FDA, there is no requirement for testing to be performed on animals to demonstrate the safety of a product.

MYTH: Animal testing is legal everywhere.

TRUTH: The EU, consisting of 27 countries made a sweeping ban of all cosmetic testing on animals in 2013 and has never turned back. Following in their footsteps, similar laws have been passed in countries such as Canada, India, Chile, South Korea, Mexico, Switzerland, and many more.

MYTH: Most companies don't test on animals anymore.

TRUTH: According to PETA "Researchers in U.S. laboratories kill more than 110 million animals in wasteful and unreliable experiments each. One of the worst culprits is the cosmetics industry, with around 78% of top cosmetic companies choosing to test on animals.

The confusion behind "Cruelty Free"

Pointed out by Caitlin Lynch in her 2022 article titled "Behind the packaging: Unraveling ‘cruelty-free'", there is unfortunately no regulation on the term "cruelty free". This means that many large companies might:

"Brands take advantage of a linguistic loophole: a company may label a finished product as not tested on animals, but “rely on raw material suppliers or contract laboratories” to conduct the animal testing instead."

-Caitlin Lynch

This tricky terminology is able to run freely in countries like the United States, where there is no ban on animal testing. While this may be disheartening, it's a vital fact that drives home the importance of legal regulation, consumer transparency, and putting your dollar towards companies who you can trust.

So How Can I Ensure I'm Really Buying Cruelty-Free?

The best way to ensure that you are buying Cruelty-Free is by doing your research! Support brands who are transparent about their ingredients, their crafting-process, and their testing policies.

Why Savor Beauty is Cruelty Free

Founder Angela Jia Kim created Savor Beauty with a mission to craft luxurious, clean skincare that was true to her Korean heritage and safe enough for her family to use. At Savor Beauty, intentional ingredients, safety, and love are just as important as effective formulas.

With these intentions in mind, it's only natural that one of Angela's founding principals for the company was that it should be cruelty-free and fight against animal testing. We believe that animals deserve the same love and respect that we show ourselves and our skin.

How Does Savor Beauty Give Back to Fight Animal Testing and Cruelty?

Thanks to your support and the success of our Holiday Campaign, we were able to sponsor 2 rescued Beagles! We've decided to keep the movement growing and will continue our support of Beagle Freedom Project. We are currently in the process of raising funds to sponsor another beagle, and hope to continue to raise awareness about the reality of animal testing in the cosmetic industry.
